Regent pair to establish Christian university in Norway
by Gina Hess
March 31, 2004
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.—A Regent alum from the School of Government and a divinity student have teamed up to establish a unique Christian University in
Bergen, Norway.
Torkil Amland (MA in government, 2002) and Leif Jacobsen (D.Min., 2004) are both members of Levende Ord, a church of about 2,700 members whose pastor
got a vision in 1999 to expand the church’s education ministry to include a Christian university. The church already operated a K-12 school, a Bible
college and a television station.
Levende Ord University, whose name means “living word”, will offer bachelor degrees in theology, media / communications, government and education. The
university is slated to open in 2007 and will have a physical campus, but they hope to include an online component as well.
“There are some Christian colleges in Norway with theology, education and media programs, but this will be the first to offer a B.A. in government,”
explained Amland. “The vision of the university is to reach the heart of Europe because it is the most secularized continent in the world. We want to
train pastors, church planters, missionaries, teachers and preachers to reach Europe.”
A couple of Regent University professors have been helping to get the university up and running. Dr. Wie Tjiong, a professor in the School of
Divinity, has been advising Amland and Jacobsen, and Dr. Wally Cox of the School of Education has visited Bergen twice to advise and share basic
concepts of Christian education with Levende Ord’s teachers.
Some of the challenges Amland and Jacobsen face are balancing Christian approaches to education with the relevant theories at work in their society,
hiring dedicated faculty, reaching potential students and obtaining accreditation for the college.
Amland explains that Regent taught him to strategically interweave politics, media, courts, education and business to reach society for Christ.
“When I came to Regent in 2000, I found much of the same vision and spirit that we have in our church. I immediately felt ‘home’. We hope to stay in
close contact with Regent in the future as we proceed,” said Amland.
Jacobsen has been a pastor in the United Methodist Church and Pentecostal Movement of Norway. He served as the principal of Oslo Christian Centre’s
Bible School and currently lives in Bergen, Norway with his wife where he serves on the pastoral staff of Levende Ord.
Amland lives in Bergen with his wife and three daughters. He worked as the headmaster of the elementary school at Levende Ord and is presently
chairman of the board of its high school. He is pursuing a master’s degree in Middle Eastern history from the University of Bergen and was elected to
Bergen’s city council in 2003 (For FrP red. Larss).
